Ciutat Vella

El Raval

The densest, most mixed, most argued-about barri in the city. Cheap for how central it is, and central in a way nowhere else is — but it is loud at every hour and has Barcelona's highest recorded petty-theft pressure.

What it's actually like

Narrow medieval streets behind La Rambla, hollowed out and rebuilt around the MACBA. Half the population was born outside Spain. Genuinely multicultural rather than touristically so, with the best cheap food in Barcelona and a street life that does not stop.

Straight trade-offs

  • Central and cheap — the two rarely coexist, and here they do for a reason
  • Pickpocketing pressure is the highest in the city; this is about property, not violence
  • Flats are old, small and often without a lift or real daylight

What's around it

Shops and pharmacies on the map, plus gyms and cafés with what they cost and whether you can actually work in them.

About these numbers

Estimated
  • Distances are from the middle of El Raval, not from a specific flat. Somewhere 900 m from the centre could be 300 m or 1.5 km from the door you are considering.
  • Walking times assume 4.6 km/h with a 25% grid-detour factor. Barcelona is flat in the Eixample and emphatically not in Gràcia or Horta.
  • Prices are advertised entry rates. For the budget chains especially, they assume a long tie-in and exclude the joining fee.
  • This list is curated, not exhaustive. An empty result is not proof there is nothing here.
What each chain is actually like ▾
VivaGymfrom €17.95/mo
Cheapest of the big chains. Functional kit, long hours, and genuinely crowded between 18:00 and 21:00. Headline rate assumes a long tie-in; expect nearer €25-30 all-in with the joining fee.
Basic-Fitfrom €24.99/mo
24/7 at most clubs, app-led, no frills. The default for anyone who just wants machines and a door code. Entry tier is single-club; multi-club and classes cost more.
DiR€€€from €35/mo
The big Catalan chain. Pools at several clubs, a deep class timetable, and a student rate worth asking about. Varies a lot by club — DiR Campus from ~€35, the Diagonal and Gràcia clubs nearer €70.
Anytime Fitness€€from €39/mo
24-hour access on a key fob, small clubs, no pool. Good if your schedule is unusual. Franchised, so pricing differs club to club.
Claror€€from €45/mo
Non-profit foundation running municipal sports centres. Pools, proper changing rooms, mixed-age crowd rather than a fitness scene. Reduced rates for students, under-25s and residents.
Duet Fit€€from €39/mo
Mid-market local chain, strong on group classes. Class-inclusive at most clubs.
Club Metropolitan€€€€from €85/mo
Premium chain with spa, pool and a heavy class timetable. Iradier is 10,000 m² and priced accordingly. Joining fee usually applies; rates vary by club.
Holmes Place€€€€from €80/mo
International premium chain. Pool, spa, well-kept kit, and a corporate weekday crowd. Cheaper on 12- or 24-month commitments than month-to-month.
Soho House€€€€€from €233/mo
A members' club that contains a gym, not a gym. Included here because people ask, and because the price needs context. This is club membership, not gym membership — you are buying the House. Under-27 rate roughly halves it.
CrossFit box€€€from €75/mo
Coached class model, small rooms, strong community. Barcelona has around thirty boxes. Class packs are common; unlimited is usually €90-120.

What we don't know about El Raval
Rent for this barri specifically
No open API publishes rent below municipality level. Ours is indicative; the city trend on the homepage is registry-sourced.
What residents think
The city services survey is representative at district level, not barri — and it measures perception, which tracks income and press coverage as much as conditions.
Noise and air quality
Both exist as city raster layers, neither aggregated per barri. Noise is a top complaint in central Barcelona and nobody publishes it per neighbourhood.
Crime, deliberately
Reporting rates rise with tourist density, so central barris look alarming largely because more gets reported. We would rather omit it than push you away from a liveable area.
