Horta-Guinardó

Another absorbed village, right at the top of the city next to UB Mundet. The cheapest barri here, and it feels like a small town.

Sant Andreu

A town with its own high street, festivals and identity that happens to be inside Barcelona. Cheap, safe, and far.

Up the hill behind the Sagrada Família, where the rents finally drop below €500 a room. Green, steep and very local.

Gràcia

Uphill behind Park Güell, where the city starts turning into Collserola. Cheap, green, quiet, and a genuinely steep walk home.

Sant Martí

Dense, residential and genuinely cheap for how many metro lines run under it. One of the last real bargains inside the Ronda.

Sants-Montjuïc

Sants's smaller neighbour, cheaper again, with the Plaça d'Espanya interchange at one end and Montjuïc above it.

A quiet old village core with two metro lines and a mainline station, twenty minutes from everywhere and priced like it is further.

Sants-Montjuïc

Working-class, Catalan-speaking, tightly organised, and attached to the country's main rail station. The best-connected affordable barri in Barcelona.

Ciutat Vella

The densest, most mixed, most argued-about barri in the city. Cheap for how central it is, and central in a way nowhere else is — but it is loud at every hour and has Barcelona's highest recorded petty-theft pressure.

Sants-Montjuïc

Between Montjuïc and Paral·lel: tapas street, theatre district, mountain on the doorstep. Central and still just about affordable.

Eixample

Ordinary residential Eixample wrapped around an extraordinary building. Two streets from the basilica the tourists vanish entirely and the price drops with them.

Eixample

Wedged between Arc de Triomf and Glòries, and underrated because nobody thinks to look there. Fast to UPF, fast to the centre, priced below both.

Gràcia

Gràcia's quiet eastern half, on the Eixample grid rather than the medieval tangle. Ten minutes' walk from the noise, and about €85 a month cheaper for it.

Les Corts

The student-adjacent barri: walking distance to UPC, Esade and UB Diagonal, and quiet enough to actually get work done.

Ciutat Vella

On the sand, and that is the entire proposition. Tiny former fishermen's flats — the famous quarts de casa — at a price that has nothing to do with their size.

Eixample

The Eixample without the price premium. Quieter, more local, more Catalan-speaking, and a genuinely good value for how central it still is.

Les Corts

Prosperous, orderly and slightly dull, which is the point. The safest-feeling part of the city that still has a metro at the end of the street.

Eixample

The barri everyone recommends and nobody can afford any more. Excellent food, excellent transport, a renovated market, and rents that have climbed faster than almost anywhere in the city.

Ciutat Vella

Postcard Barcelona, and priced like it. Beautiful to walk through, punishing to actually live in — this is the barri most people romanticise and most quickly leave.

The liveable end of the old city. Same medieval bones as the Gòtic with a fraction of the chaos, next to the Ciutadella park and a fifteen-minute walk from UPF.

Sarrià-Sant Gervasi

A former village at the foot of Collserola that never quite joined the city. The quietest and safest barri we cover, and it feels a long way from everything.

Eixample

Solid, grown-up, extremely well connected. Big modernista flats with high ceilings, shared by students who pool rent to reach them.

Gràcia

An independent town until 1897 and it still behaves like one. The default recommendation for international students, which is exactly why it is no longer cheap.

Sarrià-Sant Gervasi

Uptown Barcelona. Large flats, wide streets, private schools and the highest rents outside Pedralbes.

Sant Martí

Built for the 1992 Olympics and still feeling slightly like a masterplan. Wide, green, safe, on the beach, and short on street life.

Old textile Barcelona rebuilt as the 22@ tech district. Newer flats, the beach at the end of the Rambla, and the highest room prices of any barri here.
